La Grande Chartreuse

The history of La Chartreuse dates back to 1084, when Saint Bruno founded the Carthusian Order in France. In 1737, the Carthusian monks created the famous liqueur from a secret recipe of 130 plants and roots given to them by Marshal d’Estrées. The working philosophy of the monks – and the lay people who assist them – is based on expertise, secrecy and excellence. Chartreuses vertes and jaunes, the two main variants, are distinguished by their colour, of course, but also by their distinctive character. They have remarkable ageing potential, evolving in complexity and finesse over time.
